Mary is a highly skilled fibre artist, having received her artistic teachings from her mother, Burrayburray Guyamirrilil.

Crafted from Gunga, also known as Pandanus Palm, this intricately woven basket involves a meticulous coiling technique, and it is coloured with dyes derived from native bush plants.

Mary Ruwaypi is from Gapuwiyak, also known as Lake Evella, an Aboriginal Australian community located in north-eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, 25 kilometres south of the head of Buckingham Bay and about the same distance south-west of Arnhem Bay.
