Julie Anderson is an artist belonging to the Pitjantjatjara language and cultural group and is from the remote community of Finke, Northern Territory.

Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatkara (NPY) Women’s council, working with women in the remote Central and Western desert regions. The NPY lands cover approximately 350,000 square kilometres across the tri-state (WA, SA, NT) border region of Central Australia

This basket is made from ‘tjanpi’ meaning desert grass, woven in natural and coloured raffia.

Meet the Artist

Julie Anderson

Julie is a member of the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. She was born in 1956 at Victory Downs Station, 300km of Alice Springs. Julie currently lives in Alice Spring where fellow Tjanpi artist Margaret Smith taught her how to weave. Julie's baskets features colour and focuses on using tjanpi, raffia and sometimes wipiya (emu feathers).
