Dianne Strangways has a unique bird-carving technique, creating the illusion that these birds organically emerge from their stands. Her creations feature diverse wing designs, characterised by their prominent beaks and the distinctive ‘feathered’ walka patterns adorning their bodies and perches.

The Anangu people of the Central and Western Desert region produce contemporary carvings known as ‘punu.’ Meticulously hand-carved and adorned with intricate walka patterns, these pieces reveal deep connections to the Tjukurpa – the stories of Creation Ancestors and the events that shaped the land, its people, and their laws. Many aspects of the Tjukurpa are safeguarded by senior custodians, limiting the full description of these sacred stories.
