Caleb Hall
Meet Caleb Hall Yangga, also known as “Green Ant,” the son of Janice Walker and grandson of Wilma and Norman Walker. Hailing from the Kuku Yalanji Tribe, the Traditional Owners of the Daintree Rainforest in Far North Queensland, Caleb’s roots run deep in the rich heritage of his people.
Growing up on Kuku Yalanji country, Caleb has cultivated a profound connection to the land, finding joy in hunting and the creation of conservation artifacts. His expertise lies in the craft of Traditional Fire Stick making, a skill handed down through generations. Fire Sticks, integral to Aboriginal culture, hold historical significance and play a vital role in its preservation.
Beyond his mastery of fire stick crafting, Caleb has a passion for jewellery making and sourcing materials from the bush. The inspiration for incorporating seeds into his art struck him while listening to his family recount the story of his late grandmother. She ingeniously played with seeds as a baby to remain quiet, safeguarding her from government protectors attempting to separate her from her mother and tribe during the challenging era of the Stolen Generation. Fortunately, Caleb’s grandmother escaped this plight, thanks to her mother’s quick thinking.
Many of Caleb’s art pieces reflect the impact of his cultural upbringing, intertwining with his love for traditional hunting and gathering. Explore the profound stories and cultural heritage woven into each of Caleb’s creations.
