Lisa Khan

Lisa Khan, born in 1987, hailing from Coober Pedy. Yankunytjatjara/Antakirinja is her language. Lisa paints about her grandmother’s Country, as her grandmother was born at Mount Barry near Coober Pedy, and her grandfather’s Country, with his birthplace at Wallintina Station. She passionately portrays the parente tjukurpa, a significant tale from her grandfather’s Country about the parente lizard that stole the grinding stone. Additionally, Lisa finds inspiration in painting her beloved home, Coober Pedy.

During her upbringing, Lisa and her companions used to search for opals and engage in play amidst the sandy landscapes. Her grandmother imparted knowledge on hunting lizards, specifically the ankata (bearded dragon). They would skillfully catch, prepare, and cook it over an open flame while foraging for bush tucker and various bush fruits. Whenever she paints, a profound sense of connection to her Country envelops her, along with cherished memories of her late grandparents. Through her paintings, Lisa endeavors to convey her personal stories, ensuring they endure and are passed down to her son, nephews, and nieces.
