"The Yarrabah community holds a deep and enduring relationship with the ocean, a
connection woven through culture, identity, and Country. For generations, the
shoreline, the reef, and the vastness of the Coral Sea have shaped the community’s
stories, rhythms, and way of life. The sea is not just a landscape; it is a living
presence, an ancestor, and a teacher.Shell life, in particular, carries profound cultural meaning. The shells found along thebeaches and tidal flats are reminders of the community’s intimate bond with sea Country. They are vessels of memory—used in adornment, ceremony, song, and storytelling. Their colours, patterns, and forms speak to the seasonal changes, the movements of tides, and the cycles of life that guide the community’s connection to the natural world.
Water, too, is a central spiritual force. It represents cleansing, continuity, and the flow
of knowledge between elders and younger generations. The act of gathering by the
sea—fishing, collecting, observing, or simply being present—reaffirms the
community’s enduring relationship with their ancestors and the ecosystems that have sustained them for millennia.
These images reflects the intertwined nature of people and place in Yarrabah.
Through printed images, they aim to honour the cultural heartbeat of the community:
a deep respect for the ocean, an understanding of shell life as carriers of story, and a
recognition of water as both giver and guardian of life. Each image is an
acknowledgement of the community’s resilience, identity, and ongoing custodianship
of sea Country." Yarrabah Arts and Cultural Precinct
