The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) is a national institution dedicated to the preservation, study, and promotion of the cultures, languages, and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Established in 1964, AIATSIS is located in Canberra and plays a vital role in maintaining one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Indigenous Australian materials. It supports ethical research, education, and policy development, while also providing public access to its extensive archive, including books, photographs, films, and oral histories. AIATSIS collaborates closely with Indigenous communities to ensure cultural knowledge is protected, respected, and accurately represented. The institute also contributes to reconciliation by fostering greater understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Through its publishing arm and educational programs, AIATSIS works to share Indigenous perspectives and ensure that Australia’s First Peoples are recognised and celebrated as central to the nation’s identity and heritage.
