We’re Looking for an Arts Writer!
At Aboriginal Art Co, we believe great writing can deepen understanding, celebrate artists and create meaningful connections between people and art.
As we continue to grow, we are seeking an Arts Writer to work with us over the next six months to help strengthen our curatorial voice, support artists and build a bank of rich, engaging content that can be shared across our website, newsletters, exhibitions and programs.
This role is perfect for someone who loves contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, has a strong writing practice and is excited by the opportunity to contribute to an Aboriginal-led organisation.
About the Opportunity
The Arts Writer will work closely with our team to create high-quality written content that is thoughtful, accessible and artist-centred.
The role will include:
- Writing exhibition essays and curatorial texts
- Developing artist profiles and artist interview Q&As
- Creating informative and engaging blogs for public and sector audiences
- Supporting content planning and editorial development
- Assisting with light SEO and preparing content for website, print and EDM use
The content will help tell the stories behind our exhibitions, artists and programs while also sharing deeper knowledge about Aboriginal art, ethical practice and cultural leadership.
Who We’re Looking For
You might be perfect for this role if you:
- Are an experienced writer, journalist, curator or arts worker
- Have a strong interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture
- Can write in a way that is clear, engaging and accessible
- Have experience interviewing artists or writing about the arts
- Understand the importance of respectful, ICIP-aware language
- Are organised, self-directed and comfortable working to deadlines
- Have experience writing for websites, blogs, newsletters or publications
We are particularly interested in writers who can balance thoughtful cultural storytelling with contemporary relevance and who are excited by the opportunity to work closely with artists and a small creative team.
What We’re Looking For
This is a six-month engagement with a budget of $35,000 (including GST if applicable). Over the course of the project, the successful writer will develop approximately 20–22 pieces of content, including exhibition essays, artist profiles and educational blogs.
The workload averages around three to four pieces per month, allowing time for research, interviews, collaboration and refinement.
