Watch an Artist Talk with Kieron Anderson
Quandamooka artist Kieron Anderson joined us for an in-depth yarn about the stories, processes and cultural knowledge behind his debut solo exhibition, Medicine Woven Through the Tide.
The exhibition was the culmination of Kieron’s OCCUPY Artist Residency at Vacant Assembly, delivered in partnership with Aboriginal Art Co. Throughout the residency, Kieron explored cultural practices and storytelling across ceramics, sculpture, carving, painting and moving image.
During the Artist Talk, Kieron shared insights into his residency journey, creative practice and the layers of meaning woven throughout the exhibition. Through experimentation with clay, traditional weaving practices and natural materials, alongside mentorship from leading First Nations artists, Kieron created a body of work deeply connected to Country, culture and knowledge sharing.
As one of the last males in his family line to know and practise the cultural tradition of dugong (Bagirang) hunting, Kieron spoke about how his connection to Quandamooka Saltwater Country shaped his practice and his exploration of the dugong as a cultural teacher, provider and keeper of ecological knowledge.
The conversation explored the relationships between seasons, foods, harvesting and hunting practices, and the continuation of cultural knowledge. Kieron reflected on medicine as something found not only within plants and animals, but within the reciprocal relationships between people, Country, tides and ocean.
