Torres Strait Islander Coconut Leaf Weaving Workshop
Join Bowie Solutions for a hands-on Torres Strait Islander coconut leaf weaving experience.
Discover the cultural significance of coconut leaves and how this versatile natural resource has traditionally been woven into practical and playful items such as baskets, mats, fans, toys and more. Using fresh, hand-harvested coconut leaves, participants will learn foundation weaving skills while hearing stories and knowledge shared by Torres Strait Islander facilitators.
During the session, you’ll put these skills into practice and create your own woven coconut leaf creations, with options including a fish, grasshopper, windmill and ball.
Coconut leaf weaving is a longstanding Torres Strait Islander tradition that carries cultural knowledge, creativity, sustainability and storytelling. This workshop offers a chance to learn about this practice through hands-on making and conversation.
