'On the way, the big day' painting
Sam Harrison, On the way, the big day, 2024
Acrylic on canvas
“On the way, the big day” captures the universally shared cultural excitement of the day
before, and the journey to, a large event. Whether that be a to a meeting ground, for a
harvest festival, to the Ekka or to the Gabba for a finals series. Looking through a canopy of local flora, across beckoning waters, up to the ridge, where just over the crest a great day awaits. The Brisbane Showgrounds has been a meeting place for thousands of years, bringing together people from all over the region. With two traditional pathways leading south and one leading north directly from the site, we reflect on the lives and experiences of those whose footsteps we now walk in.
These pathways are depicted as lines of connection and decorated in patterns linking all the way through to Harrisons own cultural connections, Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri, in central NSW. These pathways are part of a continent wide network full of nodes of gathering that are kept alive today through our own movements." Sam Harrison
