This River's Comin' From West by Billy Tjampitjinpa Kenda
Billy began painting at the Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artist Studio in 2004. He focuses on his mother’s country, Jay Creek in the West MacDonnell Ranges, creating textured landscapes where rocks and flora interact in striking harmony. His paintings reflect a deep, personal connection to the Central Desert.
Painting is part of Billy’s heritage. He recalls, “My grandfather been telling me to paint… He been teaching me about painting when I was a young boy.” His grandfather, Bill Okai, and his mother, Mona Okai—who painted dot work—both inspired his creative path.
Billy’s graphic style conveys a sense of calm and balance. Since 2008, he has incorporated trucks, cars, aeroplanes, and even flying saucers into his work, influenced by growing traffic in the region. These elements contrast with the ever-present animals—kangaroos, emus, eagles—who observe and adapt to this changing landscape.
Recently, Billy has begun painting remote communities and town camps, expanding his vision of Central Australia.
