Glen Helen by Charles Jangala Inkamala
Charles Jangala Inkamala, born in 1968, has strong cultural ties to both Papunya (his mother’s country) and Ntaria/Hermannsburg (his father’s country). He now lives in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and began painting with Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists in 2017. His works focus on culturally significant sites like Mt Sonder and Glen Helen Gorge, rendered with stylized intricacy.
Charles paints with deep connection to country, his detailed line work reflecting the ancient rock formations and spiritual energy of the land. Echoing the legacy of Namatjira, he uses acrylics with a watercolour-like softness, often favouring ultramarine blue, which he boldly pushes to the foreground.
Recently, Charles has explored perspective in innovative ways, blending aerial and ground views within single works. Before joining Bindi, he created with graphite, coloured pencils, markers and ballpoint pen. Since 2022, he has also embraced ceramics, achieving notable success in this new medium.
