Kunangurra Rockhole and Seven Sisters Dreaming by Martha (Richards) Ward
This captivating painting by Martha (Richards) Ward tells the sacred story of the Seven Sisters Dreaming, a powerful narrative deeply embedded in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the artist’s Country. Featuring intricate designs and patterns, the artwork represents the landscape, ceremonial sites, and ancestral journeys linked to this important Dreaming story.
At the heart of the painting is Kunangurra Rockhole, a significant water source near the remote community of Wanarn in Western Australia. This site is intimately connected to the Seven Sisters’ epic travels across the land as they fled from the relentless pursuit of Wati Nyiru, a male figure in the Dreaming. The rockhole and surrounding terrain hold deep ceremonial and cultural importance, serving as a place of gathering, storytelling, and survival.
Martha (Richards) Ward’s use of traditional iconography and contemporary expression brings this ancient narrative to life, offering a window into the enduring connection between people, Country, and the cosmos. The rhythmic circles, flowing lines, and organic shapes reflect the movement of the Sisters as they traverse the land and sky, embodying the strength, resilience, and knowledge passed down through generations.
With its warm, earthy tones, this painting is not only a stunning visual representation of the Seven Sisters Dreaming but also a profound testament to the enduring cultural heritage of First Nations people. Each brushstroke holds the stories of ancestors, Country, and the sacred relationships that continue to guide and inspire today.
