Kunkurra (The Spiralling Wind) Bark Painting by Charlie Nangukwirrk Nanguwerr
'Kunkurra', the spiraling wind, is connected to several sites in the Kardbam clan estate. This painting can represent the mini-cyclones common during the wet season in Arnhem Land, where the artist lives. It also relates to Bilwoyinj, a site near Mankorlod, where two important Kuninjku creation beings, a father and son known as na-korrkko, are said to have hunted and eaten goanna. They left some goanna fat behind, which turned into rock and remains at the site today.
The name Bilwoyinj refers to both the site and the goanna fat. The site is also a ceremonial ground for Yabbaduruwa, a major ceremony of the Yirridja patrimoiety focused on initiation, land ownership, and the renewal of both human and natural worlds.
