Pamajini by Winnifred Puruntatameri
In this striking painting, Winnifred Puruntatameri depicts Pamajini — the Tiwi word for armbands traditionally worn during ceremony. Made from finely woven natural fibres, Pamajini are tied around the arms of dancers to enhance movement and rhythm, their textures and patterns reflecting deep cultural significance.
Winnifred’s bold and rhythmic brushwork pays homage to this important ceremonial adornment. Through her contemporary interpretation, she celebrates the strength of Tiwi cultural practices and the ongoing connection to Country and ceremony.
This work offers a glimpse into the living traditions of the Tiwi Islands, where art, dance and storytelling remain woven into daily life.
