Dylan Mark Bolger, Untitled 01 | 23.06.2024, 2024
"This work sits adjacent to my past collection of leaf SZN. Moving beyond the macaranga leaf, I am now exploring other native flora, in this work specifically the bunya leaf and bluegum ridge. The bunya leaf holds significant historical and cultural value for the Indigenous peoples of South East Queensland, highlighted by the Bunya festival. Historically, every few years, when the Bunya pine fruited with nuts, surrounding communities would gather at the festival to share knowledge and trade. Additionally, the bunya nut has colonial significance as the first trees planted in the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. The imagery in my work reflects a natural dyeing technique using a bunya leaf sourced from the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, a method developed by Murri man, Norton Fredericks. The blue gum ridge, featured in the background, inspiring the blue tones in the painting." Dylan Bolger
